What can I expect from a violin lesson
at 88 Keys Academy?
Our violin instructors at 88 Keys Academy will create a personalized program based on each student’s developmental stage, personal characteristics, and goals. Students will start with the very basics of fundamentals: learning the different parts of their instrument, correct posture for supporting the instrument and the first steps of making a pleasing sound. Intermediate and advanced students will work on scales, etudes and other technical exercises, as well as level-appropriate repertoire, sight-reading, and music theory training.
Students will need to own their own violin to bring to lessons.

What kind of guitar is best for smaller children?Another aspect of getting your first guitar is what style you plan to buy. For smaller children, I recommend getting a classical/nylon-string guitar. The strings tend to be softer than those of an acoustic/steel-string guitar and easier on small hands. Finally, it’s important to consider the size of the guitar when buying for children.

How do you choose the right guitar? When picking out your guitar, there are many options available. You can shop in person at a music store such as Guitar Center, or you can even shop online. I, personally, bought my current guitar and case brand new from Ebay. While some online options may be much more affordable, it’s always a good idea to do your research and compare the quality and reviews to those on more commercial websites. I recommend Yamaha, especially for beginners, when picking out a guitar. They tend to be fairly affordable and good quality, too.

Do you offer performance opportunities for the students? We know that students practice more when preparing for a performance. Local performances also provide students an opportunity to see others perform and build friendships with their peers. Plus, showing off your talents to your local community is fun! Students may participate in community concerts at local businesses as well as formal recital opportunities for a perfected performance.

What's the best way to be fitted for a violin?A student first needs to be fitted for a violin. For a student to be comfortable learning, it is important to have the correct size violin. Most music shops can fit students for a violin, and St. Louis Strings is a great place to do this. Renting an instrument is a great opportunity for a child to discover a love for an instrument without the pressures of purchasing it forever. If a student rents an instrument, as they grow their violin can be swapped in for bigger sizes to allow them to be comfortable while playing. Along with his or her violin, a student will need a bow, rosin, shoulder rest, and instrument case. For Rentals, click here: St. Louis Strings: https://www.stlstrings.com

How do you maintain a violin bow?To maintain a violin bow, the bow hair should be slightly loosened each time it is put in the case. When taking the violin back out of the case for practice, tighten the bow back to where it was originally. Not only does a bow need to be loosened after practice, it also needs rosin. It isn’t necessary to apply rosin each time a student practices, but if the bow friction is low, applying a few strokes of rosin should help.
